“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” Luke 4: 18-19
With these words Jesus began his ministry and as the Spirit of the Lord was on him so that same Spirit is on us so that as individuals who form the Church so that we can continue the ministry in the world today.
At Elmwood we understand the ministry of Jesus to be a ministry of healing so that the world and her people may be restored to the goodness and likeness in which God created it in the beginning. We regard every service, every prayer and each moment of outreach an opportunity to “heal” whether through the sharing of peace, the bringing of justice, the calming of personal storms, the feeding of the hungry or the changing of sickness to health. We believe the Church has a very active role to play in the health and healing of individuals and communities through a holistic approach in which a variety of alternatives can compliment each other when embraced by prayer.
We believe that faith and prayer can help people through sickness and grief and that with massage and oils and natural medicines we can all support the work of doctors and nurses. As a physical massage of the body can ease tensions and stress so prayer is like a spiritual massage which can ease all the stress which builds up in the heart and mind and can cause depression, worry and fear. Our Mission is “to be a church that crosses the boundaries of race and culture to share good news with the poor in spirit; seeks freedom for the captives of poverty and prosperity; can give new vision to the blind; will help release people who feel oppressed and recognises that the time has come for the healing of the nations.” To achieve that we believe we are servants to the community and therefore have a vision “….to bear good fruit with the church as a branch of the True Vine and God is the Gardener who is pruning our faith.” (John 15) Our faith is rooted in the bible of which we seek to have a better understanding so that each individual may grow spiritually stronger and wiser. The Message we share in our Sunday services is produced as a study guide each week for this purpose. The Message >>>>>
We have a number of activities which serve the community and are always looking to develop our outreach further so please see…….. Community>>>>>>
We believe the Church is a global family so out ministry reaches out to friends in Jamaica and Zimbabwe, but also other parts of the world when the need beckons. We provide regular support for the Church in Chinhoyi, Zimbabwe though, where our minister, Richard Becher, and a church member, Kim Plumpton, have visited. Paul Neshangwe, their Pastor, and his family have also spent time at Elmwood. Zimbabwe>>>>>>>
We also have a relationship with Meadowbrook Church in Kingston, Jamaica, where members and ministers have again exchanged visits. Meadowbrook>>>>>>
We have established a Mission Fund through which we provide support for different charities, in particular the projects run by the Church in Chinhoyi. Mission Fund>>>>>>>
