What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of medicine that stimulates the body and mind to heal itself. It treats the body ‘holistically’, ie it looks at the whole person physically, mentally and spiritually and acknowledges that everyone is different and therefore unique. So although we may all catch the same flu virus, each person’s symptoms may vary slightly making their experience of the condition unique to them. Homeopathy honours this difference and a homeopath will select and prescribe remedies to fit all the individual characteristics of the patient.
How does it work?
Homeopathy works on the ancient principle of ‘like cures like’, first described by the Greek physician Hippocrates 2,500 years ago. Put simply, this principle states that a substance that, in large quantities, can cause a disease, can, in a minute dose, ease that disease.
Take the example of coffee. When taken in large doses, coffee can cause insomnia. However, a homeopathic remedy made from coffee (Coffea) and given in a minute dose is used to help insomnia sufferers.
Why use Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is one of the safest forms of medicine available, because it uses minute doses of natural substances and relies on the energy of the substance rather than its chemical properties. Homeopathic remedies are made from naturally occurring substances such as plants and minerals. It is easy to use, gentle, yet powerful, working with and supporting the body’s own healing processes, making it great for babies, children, pregnant women and the elderly.
Homeopathic remedies are easy to take and come in the form of tablets, powders or liquids.
What can it treat?
Homeopathy can be used to treat acute or chronic conditions – anything from cuts and bruises to arthritis and depression. It is particularly effective in the treatment of long-standing conditions such as eczema and asthma. Homeopathy is great for childhood ailments such as colic, teething or hyperactivity. Its gentle healing power also has a profound effect on emotional and mental states such as bereavement, anxiety or fears. It is especially effective in the treatment of the following:
Anxiety
Arthritis
Childhood conditions
Coughs
Digestive problems
Eczema
Hay Fever
Menopause
PMT
What can I expect during a consultation?
Your first consultation will take about an hour, with any subsequent consultations lasting between 45 minutes and 1 hour
During consultation you will be asked to describe your symptoms in as much detail as possible. This helps to create a picture of the ‘unique’ expression of your condition, so things to bear in mind before your first consultation are:
You might be asked about your family’s medical history – did parents, grandparents, uncles or aunts suffer from the same or similar conditions? Your own medical condition will be taken into consideration, as well as diet, lifestyle and emotional issues. Any detail relating to your well-being, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is useful and helps to fine tune your prescription so that it matches your individual symptoms
About your Homeopath – Maxine Swann
I trained for 4 years with the Homeopathy College West Midlands, qualifying as a homeopath in 2004. I am a member of the Alliance of Registered Homeopaths, the British Complementary Medicine Association and I am also an Indian Head Massage practitioner. I have attended Elmwood church since the early 1990s and feel blessed to be a part of its healing ministry assisting the people I treat along the road to good health. I believe that healing is a journey and whatever the distance, be it long or short, it is always good to have someone beside you offering encouragement and support.
I believe that the human body has its own innate healing ability. The body already knows how it should be working, but for many reasons, be they lifestyle or emotional issues, the body ‘forgets’ and this is when disease sets in. Homeopathy provides a gentle, yet powerful ‘reminder’ to the body of how things should be.
As a homeopath, my aim is to locate the root of your condition, use remedies to release these blocks and stimulate the body’s own powerful healing processes. I consider your whole picture – physical, mental and spiritual, past, present and future – gently bringing you to a place of deeper self-awareness. This is where healing truly begins.
