What is Indian Head Massage?
Indian Head Massage is a deeply relaxing and stress relieving experience. The massage itself is based on the ancient system of medicine known as Ayurveda. It has been practised in India for over 4,000 years, passed down from one generation to the next. The Western interpretation of this therapy has extended the massage to cover the face, neck, shoulders, upper back & arms
The beauty of this massage is that it can be performed anywhere, in a seated position, through clothing, with or without oils. A complete treatment will only take about 30-45 mins
This holistic therapy balances mind, body & spirit. It is both invigorating and relaxing, promoting health and well-being
What are the benefits?
Indian Head Massage is renowned for its ability to relieve stress. The head, jaw, neck & shoulders are particularly vulnerable to the accumulation of tension, resulting in stiff necks, shoulder aches, eyestrain and headaches.
The gentle but firm movements of the massage relax these areas by breaking down nodules that develop in these muscles easing stiffness and bringing about greater flexibility
What can it do for me?
Not only does Indian Head massage improve the condition of muscles & joints, it also produces:
What can it treat?
Indian Head Massage can help in the treatment of a range of conditions:
Anxiety
Arthritis
Depression
Eye strain
Fatigue
Headaches
Sinusitis
Sleep problems
Eye Strain
Many of the movements performed on the head and scalp during Indian Head Massage are designed to alleviate tension in the eye area caused by watching television, reading or looking at computer screens for prolonged periods.
Many headaches actually stem from contraction of the neck muscles. Stress, bad posture or manual work can set up tension in this area that eventually manifests as a headache. Indian Head Massage treats the neck gently, increasing its mobility and suppleness.
What can I expect during an Indian Head massage?
True Indian Head Massage is performed in a seated position. If you are having the massage through clothing you may be asked to remove top layers. You can, if you wish, have an oil applied to the scalp only, but this is entirely up to you. The joy of this massage is that it is completely versatile and can be adapted to suit your needs.
If you choose to have a massage with oil, you will be asked to remove upper clothing and place a towel around your torso. Light, gentle oil combinations such as Almond and Lavender can be used, but other combinations are available, the benefits of which will be discussed with you before the massage.
Before the massage you will be asked about any physical or medical conditions that might prevent the massage from taking place. For example, if you have had a recent injury, surgery or accident, particularly in the upper body area
At the beginning of the massage you will be asked to relax and breathe deeply. A range of movements will be used to smooth, stretch and relax the muscles, releasing tension, increasing circulation and soothing aches and pains. Not surprisingly, many clients enter a state of deep relaxation during this time, with some falling asleep by the end of the session!
